In 1982 Larry Smith identified a need in Western North Carolina. This resulted in a business model that would focus on providing door service and security solutions to local businesses. It all started on the back of a motorcycle… In order to get this business off the ground, Larry began by producing business cards to distribute. Larry set off on his motorcycle with his 10 year old son Byron and together they introduced the new business idea to the community. Little did Byron know that this was the beginning of a successful business that he and his wife Celena would one day lead. The company began offering exceptional service for institutional, commercial, and industrial businesses — hence the name ICI Door Control.
With a focus on finding the right solutions for their clients as opposed to just selling them a product, the company has developed strong relationships that have blossomed into great partnerships. Due to the exponential growth of the company, a new facility was built in the Spring of 1999. Over the next 15 months things were growing faster than leadership ever thought possible as ICI exceeded all expectations and continued flourishing. Then in July of 2000 everything came crashing down as the building went up in flames. The electrical fire smoldered for days and all that remained were ashes and memories. The new facility was gone, and hundreds of thousands of dollars of equipment and products lost. The hopelessness hung in the air like thick smoke when the company found out that they didn’t have fire insurance. All that they had worked so hard to build over the past 18 years was possibly gone forever.
There was a strong conviction that bankruptcy would be unethical to all of the vendors and customers they had partnered with over the years. With the love and support of customers, friends, and family, God made a way for the company to begin laying a foundation to rebuild from this tragedy. Through hard work and persistence, every debt was paid.
The company aggressively sought new opportunities and added new services to better serve its customers. This was a pivotal moment for the company and the first step to the formation of the multigenerational family business that ICI Door Control has become. Today, the company is owned and led by Byron and Celena Smith.
The ICI team strives to be physical security professionals, consulting and distributing products and services to fulfill the needs of their customers.
